About Destrie Boyar

As all artists, Destrie is a patchwork of his experiences. He was born and raised in a walk up apartment embued with all of the charms of pre-millenniel NYC. A tub in the kitchen and the co-mingling smells of breakfast sandwiches and dry cleaning cleaning solution wafting up between the pre-war cracks. He found his artistic footing early, drawing fantastical pencil sketches with his adored mother. She, a stunning former model with a Studio 54 card, a cigarette in one hand and an endless cast of eccentric co-conspirators, would regale her young son with stories of a recent decadent past. Visits with his father checked the boxes of essential boyhood, fishing, skateboarding, baseball games and the freedoms of a relatively bucolic Yonkers. Being part city and part suburbs and the child of an "Eastside Story", Puerto Rican mother and Irish father, formed in him a glimmer of the literal all or nothing experiences of his subsequent years. A quality he carries through his work. A darkness and light, a decadence and austerity, addiction and sobriety, the volume on full blast or just the flagellant "thwat" of the paint brush hitting his canvas. The act of his painting as vital as the output, he finds a catharsis in laying it ALL out, choosing colors and techniques that tell the story of his vibrant inner world, albeit in an obscure language that at times may even escape his fluency. Destrie's art is not just a reflection of his journey, but an invitation to an imperfect conversation that you'll feel sated for having.
Beyond the studio, he shares his life with his designer fiance, daughter and son and three beloved co-conspitorial cats.
